Course Web Sites

When you begin to build your new web site, it's a good idea to take some time to plan the content and the design of your site. You can create a web-intensive course, designing your pages to take advantage of the unique communication and linking characteristics of the web. You can instead offer a "web-enhanced" course that only uses some features (for example, streaming media), but not others.

Some questions to consider when planning a course web site:

  • How will the web site support the educational objectives of the course?
  • What course materials will be placed online? Materials may include a syllabus, assignments, readings, course materials, lecture notes, presentations, lab instructions, exercises, quizzes, or staff information.
  • How will the material appear? As text, images, or links to files?
  • Will the course web site offer links to other resources on the web? If so, will the links supplement course material, support class activities, or provide sources for research assignments?

Creating Your Course Web Site

CIT has two options for creating course web sites:

  • Blackboard
     Blackboard is a course management and course web site tool. Features include: course content delivery, assignments, online quizzes, interactive communication tools and collaborative group work. For more information, please see the pages about Blackboard.
  • Course Web Hosting
     Create a course web site using tools such as Dreamweaver, and host it on one of our course web servers. These servers support instructional uses of the web. They can be used by faculty to store web pages of any format and any design. This option is best for those with some web development experience. Web Space for Student Assignments

Web server space and student accounts are available for course assignments. The server space and student accounts are created for a single semester only.  See Student Web Sites for Coursework for more information.

Please note: If you currently have a course or research site on the Instruct1 server, please contact us to have it migrated to the new hosting environment.

  • Open Monday-Friday 9:00AM - 5:00PM during the academic year
  • Closed on university holidays
