February 2009
New Academic Technology Center Opens on the Arts Quad
ATC Stimson Opening
A new Academic Technology Center (ATC) opened in Stimson Hall on February 4. The new center provides faculty, instructors, and graduate TAs a second campus location where they find help and training in the use of computer technologies for instruction.

The ATC in Stimson offers the same technology and assistance as the original location, and the Arts Quad address makes it convenient for more instructors to access no-cost support in an innovative workspace. Early in 2008, Faculty Support Services in CIT asked campus faculty and teaching staff what they wanted in a lab, and the ATC design reflects their responses: a flexible and laptop-friendly space, wireless Internet, furniture on wheels to rearrange for small groups, and technology that can be configured for a number of uses.

The core offerings of both ATCs include:
•    state-of-the-art computers equipped with creativity software like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro
•    equipment to prepare multi-media course content for classroom or web-based delivery, such as podcasts, audio, and video
•    scanners to convert documents, images, and 35 mm slides into digital formats
•    tools to build course web sites
•   support for these and other instructional technologies from a dedicated staff
The ATC in Stimson is in Room G27. During the academic year, instructors are invited to walk in any time Monday-Friday from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. or make an appointment. During morning hours the space is available by reservation for small classes or collaborative sessions.

The ATC in Computing and Communications Center Room 124 is open Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. during the academic year.

For help at either location or to reserve a workstation, instructors should

email atc_support@cornell.edu

Upgrades to Course Web Site Hosting Service
As you may know, one of the services Faculty Support Services offers is hosting course websites.  In the past year, we upgraded the service with the rollout of two new servers for hosting.

After the arrival of these new servers, it was possible to retire the older Instruct1 Course Web Server. The course technologies team worked with faculty and staff to archive older content and migrate active course sites to the newer web hosting environments.

Upgrade to Blackboard 7.3 planned for June 2009
Blackboard will be upgraded at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year to version 7.3.   We will be providing more information to course instructors prior to the change.  All summer sessions will continue to use the current system to avoid any disruption during the upgrade.

Student Technology Assistant Program
Faculty and Academic Staff seeking help looking for help with Audio/Video, slide scanning, Blackboard,  survey creation, and other instructional technologies can find it through the Student Technology Assistant Program (STAP).  Student assistants can work one-on-one with you in your office or in either Academic Technology Center.

To make an appointment, c
all 255-9760 or email STAP@cornell.edu.
ePortfolio Pilot Project
A new pilot for spring 2009 is examining the capability of ePortfolio, a new tool for students and faculty in need of a way to exhibit and refer to current and past work. An ePortfolio provides an environment where portfolio owners, typically students, can exhibit their work. It also allows faculty to provide students with structure and guidance for their portfolios.

The ePortfolio pilot is a combined effort of Faculty Support Services and the Center for Teaching Excellence with faculty in art, architecture, and planning; languages; education; and scholarship. Participating faculty will be piloting the use of electronic portoflios in one section of their classes for the spring semester using Sakai's Open Source Portoflio (OSP) software.

If you are interested in receiving updates on the pilot, its process, and its discoveries, send an email to:  atc_support@cornell.edu

Campus Initiatives
New Provost Featured on CyberTower
CyberTower is currently featuring the new provost, W. Kent Fuchs, dean of the College of Engineering, in a special video interview in the Forum area. Go to http://cybertower.cornell.edu to hear Provost Fuchs and Dean Glenn C. Altschuler discuss the provost's background and interests, his role, and his thoughts about the university's challenges and opportunities in these unpredictable times.

CyberTower is a web-based program from Cornell’s Adult University, and is produced by Faculty Support Services in CIT.

Information Competency Initiative

The Cornell Undergraduate Information Competency Initiative encourages faculty to explore creative and effective ways to engage undergraduate students. The Initiative promotes the redesign and creation of assignments for courses to integrate research skills into the classroom and the curriculum, and is funded by a grant from Cornell University Library and the office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

During summer 2008, nine course project pilots aimed to improve the research skills and information literacy of undergraduate students. Faculty collaborated with consultants from Cornell University Library, the Center for Teaching Excellence, Faculty Support Services, CIT, the Cornell IT Policy Office, and the Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines.

The program is planned again for June 2009.  More information is on the institute’s  web site:

Horizon Report 2009
Designed to provide a view of near- , mid-, and far-horizon technologies, the Horizon Report from the New Media Consortium and EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative describes itself as charting "the landscape of emerging technologies for teaching, learning and creative expression."

Published annually since 2002, the report provides succinct technology descriptions and examples resulting from extensive research and conversations with sources in industry, higher education, and museums. An advisory board participates in the process and does the final vetting of the selected technologies, trends, challenges, and issues.

Horizon Reports are being released with a Creative Commons License, and faculty may freely replicate and distribute them for noncommercial purposes provided that they are distributed in their entirety.
Current and past Horizon reports are available at
